Reticence may be an elderly doctrine to preach, yet from the artistic point of view I am sure it is a sound one. Reticence conduces to effect, blatancy ruins it.
—M.R. James, “Some Remarks on Ghost Stories”
In the Halloween edition of the Friday Link Pack I linked to a fantastic article that explored the influence M. R. James had on the work H. P. Lovecraft. Ever since that article I have been exploring Mr. James’ work, and this quote stuck out to me. I wanted to share.
Okay, back to writing. Good luck with your own creative endeavors!
Thanks for sharing this quote (and the link). I’ve only read “O Whistle and I’ll Come to You, My Lad,” but I have an entire book of his ghost stories sitting on my shelf.
