I’ve read several authors’ essays or interview remarks, about starting a novel with no idea how it will end. In fact, one of them might have been Stephen King.
Some are gardeners, and some are architects. Some outline and some fly by the seat of their pants—no one method is right for everyone, and not every bit of advice applies to each writer. You glean what works for you.
Even good writers can utter complete nonsense.

I don’t know, it’s a pretty common refrain. A lot of authors have given similar advice concerning knowing what you’re writing toward.
