You Do the Talking

Today marks the 2nd birthday of Red Litten World, the third book in The Bell Forging Cycle. I tend to talk a lot about my books. So to change things up, I figured it’d be fun to celebrate the anniversary of Red Litten World by letting you speak. Below is a collection of reviews written by readers. I pulled these today. All of the selected reviews are all public, and I’ll link to their location. Since it’s Red Litten World’s birthday, let’s work backward from there…

Huge thanks to everyone who has taken the time and left reviews on my books. Reviews (both positive and negative) are vital to the success of a novel and its future promotion. Without a minimum number, a lot of promotional houses won’t let someone like me submit special offers on their work. Likewise, new readers won’t know what to expect before they make a purchase. So if you like a book (or a series of books) be sure to leave a review.

I know a lot of readers get stressed about reviews, but they tend to overthink them. Reviews don’t need to be an extensive book report, and you’re not writing an article. (Unless you want to of course.) Just write up a few quick sentences saying why you liked or loathed a particular novel. It helps a lot.

Update: Signed Copies Of Red Litten World Are Sold Out

The Bad News: as of this morning I am all out of signed paperback copies of Red Litten World on my store. So if you had been waiting, you are going to wait a bit longer.

The Good News: there are more paperback books on their way. I should have a fresh box o’ Red Litten World in the next week or so, and it will soon make its triumphant return to the store!

If you can’t wait, ebooks are available everywhere, and unsigned copies are available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Powell’s. Interestingly, Barnes & Noble is the cheapest and is currently selling for under $12. (It’s usually around $15 elsewhere.) Then if you want you copy signed, just find me at one of my con appearances, and I’d be happy to sign it there.

You can also win a signed copy! Northwest Horror Podcast is giving away three copies of Red Litten World to their listeners. You can find out more on my post on Monday, or you can listen to their latest episode and learn how you can win.

Red Litten World, 1 Week Old

It’s Tuesday, that means my latest Lovecraftian urban fantasy novel, Red Litten World, has been out for a week. So far it’s been a great launch, better than Old Broken Road which is impressive. I’ve already seen a few people post reviews on Amazon, iTunes, and over on Goodreads which is always exciting. And, early feedback suggests people are loving Wal’s return to Lovat. If you’ve finished the book, please help me out and leave an honest review either where you purchased the book or over on Goodreads. (Or both!) Reviews help a lot.

If you’re new to the world of the Territories or just need a refresher, check out some of the amazing fan art on my Fan Art Pinterest Board. A lot of very talented artists have shared work they created inspired by The Bell Forging Cycle. If you have your own art, please, send it to me I love sharing fan art with the community.

If you haven’t picked up your copy of Red Litten World, there are plenty of ways to do so! You can pick up paperback copies at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Powell’s, or direct from My Store. If you’d like to pick it up via eBook, you can get it from the usual suspects KindleKoboiBooksGooglePlayNook, and of course from My Store.

For those who ordered paperbacks from My Store last week, I owe you an apology. There was a slight delay. I received a shipment of books last week, but they weren’t up to my standards quality-wise. So I had to return them and get a new batch printed and it’s delayed my shipping a bit. While they were readable, I made the decision that they weren’t something I was willing to put out on the market. I have a fresh batch coming today and if all goes according to plan, I should have your books in the mail this week.

Finally thanks again to you, all of my amazing readers. I appreciate your excitement and passion about this crazy little series. It means a lot, it keeps me going. Thanks for making Red Litten World one of the books you’ve chosen to read this year. Enjoy your time with Wal back in the warren of Lovat. We’re not done yet and it’s going to be one hell of a ride.

My Top 5 Posts

I have been busy. Real busy. So while keep plugging away I figured in the interim it’d be fun to visit my top 5 blog of all time. So here we go, starting with number five:

5. Building A Better Book Cover

I have spent the better part of 15 years working as a designer. So at the beginning of 2014 I shared some of my knowledge on what it takes to make a great book cover. I got a lot of positive feedback on this one so it’s no surprise it made the top 5 list.

4. Scrivener

Scrivener is my go-to writing software for a number of reasons. Instead of rehashing on others wrote in this post I linked to some of my favorite articles about the best word processing software on the market.

3. Barnes & Noble Closing 200+ Stores

I found it amusing that this was on the list. I’m not a book industry site, nor am I a breaking news blog, yet for whatever reason this post got a lot of traction with you readers.

2. “The Stars Were Right” Cover Revealed!

This one wasn’t a surprise. I love doing cover reveals, and clearly my readers do as well. (You can see Old Broken Road‘s cover reveal here.)

So that covers the top four. The number one blog post was far and away my biggest hit scoring nearly five times the amount of traffic than The Stars Were Right‘s cover reveal and more visits than all the previous posts combined…

1. My New Whiteboard: Scapple

Back in December of last year while I was starting work on Red Litten World I picked up and began to play with Scapple. I wrote a quick review which was then re-posted by the good folks over at Literature & Latte, thanks to them traffic exploded! Since going live the post has garnered views from thousands of visitors and I still get occasional hits to this day.

So there you have it, from cover design to Scrapple, the top five posts in the last two years.A big thank you to all you readers. I really appreciate the support, your comments, and everyone’s encouragement. It makes doing this fun. Here’s to two more years, more posts, and many, many more books!

Barnes & Noble Closing 200+ Stores

Barnes & Noble to shut 200+ stores in the next 10 years

This link has been popping up everywhere, but I wanted to share it here as well. It seems Barnes & Noble will be closing 200+ stores over the next 10 years (Another link HERE in case you’re not a WSJ subscriber.) This is being reported as a strategic move, and they aren’t giving up, etc – still it’s an interesting development.

This isn’t necessarily bad news; book sales are up. What I’m wondering is with the closing of so many big box stores we couldn’t see a resurgence in independent booksellers stepping in to fill the gaps that a big box store has left. A small book shop can operate with significantly less overhead than bloated big box stores, and I’d imagine there is still and will continue to be a market for books sold via foot traffic. (Also, I love indie book shops and hope they never go away.)
