Old Haunts: Go To Hell

📍 Martello Warren
🏙 Level Four
🕝 Mid-Afternoon

We walked in companionable silence through the narrow streets of a quiet dimanian warren called Martello. These days it was home to apartment complexes, private one-room schoolhouses, and small manufacturing facilities. It wasn’t far from the Bonheur Seafoods cannery, and many of the union workers employed there lived here. The streets were cramped, brick and cement walls, the roof above low. It gave street sounds a muffled quality you don’t find in many other warrens.

Recruitment posts were plastered along the street’s walls, with Hellgate Mine’s continual encouragement to any able-bodied workers to GO TO HELL. I’m sure some copywriter thought they were real clever with that one.

“Been lost since the death of their master, cloakin’ themselves in mourning garments and the like. Not much more than parasites now; cling to whoever would take ‘em. They deal only in shadows and whispers. That ain’t much in the way of currency.”

Old Haunts: Order Up

📍 Shantak Coffee
🚢 Deck Three, Kaleetan District (Onboard the Gamble)
🕘 Mid-Morning

“The spot had a more substantial appearance than other locations on this deck. Its walls were solid bulkheads, and it had its own door that led into a dark interior. The sign above was neon, the glass twisted to illustrate in blue glowing tubes a creature that was a hybrid between bat and bird, paired with an ugly horse’s head. The glass was animated to give the bird-thing a herky-jerky appearance as if it was in flight. A white fabric sign below read ‘Lovat’s Oldest Operating Coffee Shop’ in red Strutten letters.”

“Lifts rise and fall through Lovat’s superstructure constantly. Because of their size they’re pretty slow, but it beats climbing the stairs between levels. Hundreds of them whir, hum, and clack their way along, passing between floors, carrying passengers and cargo up and down. The public city lines usually run inside the massive pillars that hold the levels aloft, though those aren’t the only hoists in the city. Lifts of all shapes and sizes owned by all sorts of interests run day and night. There are express lines and extravagant lifts for the rich. There are lifts for cargo, and for school children.”
