Old Haunts: A Serene Auseil

📍 Pathé Warren
🌃 Level Four
🕠 Early Morning

“The lights in the ceiling were dim. The thin crowd was lit only by humming neon signs, glowing Auseil branches, and the occasional pools of light that dribbled out of apartment windows.”

—Waldo Bell, Red Litten World

📍 Wilcox Warren
🌇 Level Four
🕢 Morning

“A scorched flat plain stretched off in every direction uninterrupted. No hills, no mountains, just endless wastes. In the distance a broken sun was setting, and it lengthened our shadows across the flat expanse.”

“The spot had a more substantial appearance than other locations on this deck. Its walls were solid bulkheads, and it had its own door that led into a dark interior. The sign above was neon, the glass twisted to illustrate in blue glowing tubes a creature that was a hybrid between bat and bird, paired with an ugly horse’s head. The glass was animated to give the bird-thing a herky-jerky appearance as if it was in flight. A white fabric sign below read ‘Lovat’s Oldest Operating Coffee Shop’ in red Strutten letters.”

—Waldo Bell, Gleam Upon the Waves

“Lifts rise and fall through Lovat’s superstructure constantly. Because of their size they’re pretty slow, but it beats climbing the stairs between levels. Hundreds of them whir, hum, and clack their way along, passing between floors, carrying passengers and cargo up and down. The public city lines usually run inside the massive pillars that hold the levels aloft, though those aren’t the only hoists in the city. Lifts of all shapes and sizes owned by all sorts of interests run day and night. There are express lines and extravagant lifts for the rich. There are lifts for cargo, and for school children.”

“I leaned my head against the monorail window and watched buildings flash past. I felt sick, lost, and lonely. I was terrified. I had started to shake after collapsing into my seat. Too focused on fleeing, I had skipped buying a ticket. I hoped the conductor was feeling lazy and wouldn’t pass through the car.”
